Meet the Protectors of the Kingdom

They're the short furry ones, not the giant furry one. These are the dogs, Lily and Lucy. Both are ostensibly boxer mixes. You never know... they might just be. Certainly they have the inherent goofiness of boxers. Clearly neither has a great deal of intelligence as about a nanosecond after I took this photo Lily, the brindle, bit the buffalo on the nose. It did not make for a happy buffalo. It seems that cranky buffalo lower their heads, snort and paw at the ground just like you see bulls do at bullfights. Not that I've ever seen an actual bullfight, but common knowledge tells us that's what they do. Common knowledge tells us nothing about buffalo. Common knowledge, or at least my common knowledge, is not so helpful out here in my neck of the woods. In this case, I went with instinct. I screamed at decibels only the dogs (and buffalo) could hear and turned into Psycho Lady. Both the dogs and the buffalo looked at me and took a giant step away from the fence. No kidding. I have a voice that buffalo fear. It never came that close to the fence again. Lily thinks it is her mighty warrior abilities, but deep down, we all know it was scared of the crazy lady with the camera.

OMG! I just about fell out of my chair laughing at your posts! I loved your Holy Heat Lamp Batman post on BYC and had to check out your blog - I love it! Keep 'em coming!

Glad you liked it. In about two weeks I'll start daily postings of the incoming chickens. Check back. It promises to be an entertaining summer! :)

My chickens are due to arrive on Thurs - 30 bantam chicks from Privett. I'm in the post office several times a week and they know me by name - I don't think they're ever going to forgive me for ordering chickens through the mail!

I haven't broken it mine yet. :) I need to drop off my granny squares for the crochet swap. I figure to let them know then. I can't be the only person out here who has ordered mail chicks before. I am out in the middle of no where!
Good luck on your chicks! What kind did you get?

20 Silkies and 10 D'Uccles from Privett - they still had the colors and varieties I wanted. I ordered blue, buff and white silkies and Porcelain and Self Blue D'Uccles. I wanted the bantams just for fun and I picked up some Araucuna chicks so I'd have some full-size eggs. I think it'd drive me crazy to try to figure out the bantam to standard egg conversion for all my favorite recipes! (I like to crochet, too! but, I'm a terrible knitter)

I heard the conversion is 3 bantum eggs equals 2 standard eggs, but I don't know if that takes into account the difference in standard egg sizes (small to jumbo) and bantum egg sizes (tiny to small). I figure to just use 1 bantum egg as half a standard.
I ordered a white silkie and a blue silkie. I'm kind wishing I had ordered more! They're so sweet. I'm hoping to add a couple of mille fluer d'uccles (if they'll let me). Other than that I have Ameraucanas, Welsummers, Buff Orps, wyandottes, a buff crested polish and a bantum sebright. It will be a mixed lot for sure.
Did you do the crochet swap? If not, they'll do another one in the fall. It's been great fun!
Post pics on BYC once your chicks come. I can't wait to see them!

My baby chicks arrived yesterday, all 30 alive and kicking. They are the cutest things I have ever seen! Bantams are sooooo tiny - it's like holding a piece of fluff in your hand. I took a zillion pics - my BYC id is Southernbelle - I saw you posted on my poll about my foster DD's Make-a-Wish - I'll get some of my pics up. Where did you order your babies from?

City Girl said...

Ohhhh... that's who you are! Did you and your foster daughter come up with a wish yet? I think you are terribly cool for having foster kids.
I ordered my chicks from mypetchicken. I wanted bantums, but I needed them sexed. It was worth the extra money to make sure they were girls. I can't wait for them to get here!
Post pics of your new babies on BYC! I wanna see!

I'm working on a BYC page, but I'm terribly techno-challenged! (dh is an engineer/computer whiz, so he's always teasing me) 2 of my little babies died the other day and I was sooooo bummed - I don't know why - it just happens, I guess.

I can't wait to see what yours look like! I want some more rare breed standards - like your Welsummers, but DH is hyperventilating as it is. In addition to my bantam babies I have 10 standard sized: 2 adults, 2 at the point-of-lay and 6 baby Araucana. That's enough for table eggs, but I like the idea of selling hatching eggs one day...

Faith is leaning towards Disneyworld for her Make-a-Wish. Someone on my post mentioned the princess castle and you should've seen the look on her face when I told her there was a princess castle!

I think Disney has a deal where you daughter can meet the princesses in Cinderella's castle. I think they get to eat lunch with them after being dolled up in a princess dress and shoes, sparkly makeup and a new hairdo. It is supposedly the girliest thing on earth. See if Make-a-Wish can hook you up with that in addition to tickets to Disney.

Trust me. I will post zillions of pics once the chicks get here. I will likely post them on here instead of BYC or Chickencrossing. Photobucket is difficult to use with dialup. Blogspot let's you post them straight from your desktop.

I'm really wanting to add some mille fleurs to the lot. I also have been watching the hatching posts enviously. I may break down and buy an incubator. We'll see. I'm kinda waiting to see how this first batch does. I'm sorry you lost some of yours. I'm afraid that's going to be part of it. They're so little when they get here.
Stay tuned. The chicks show up on Tuesday or Wednesday. Whee!!!

Did you see the BYC posts about people using toaster ovens and skillets or crock pots as still air incubators!!!!!! When I read it, it actually made sense - a warm/simmer setting is quite low about 100 deg and the heating element runs all around it, so nice even temp, a fan probably wouldn't be needed... Food for thought anyway! I think it's Farmer Kitty doing it - check it out!

Yeah, I've seen those posts. I don't know... I have a hard time incubating eggs in something that you normally fry them in. :)
Plus, I don't have an electric skillet. I'm not much of a cook.
